Medical Terminology for Interpreters: One-Day Workshop

Understand medical terminology and develop strategies to interpret correctly!

If you ask a medical interpreter about his or her biggest challenge, perhaps the most common answer you’ll hear is “medical terminology.” Medical terminology is essential for general, community and medical interpreters. The precision of an interpreter’s work in medical matters relies heavily on terminology.

THE PROGRAM
Medical Terminology for Interpreters teaches you how to 1) Correctly use basic medical terms in two languages and 2) Develop skills for overcoming challenges in medical terminology.

Learn to:

  • Use the meaning of Latin/Greek roots and affixes to understand and accurately interpret medical terminology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic terminology for body parts, body systems and diseases.
  • Discuss basic terms for tests and procedures.
  • List and compare strategies and resources for learning additional medical terminology

HOW IT WORKS
Medical Terminology for Interpreters is a one-day, seven-hour workshop open to interpreters of any language. (There will be a special focus on Spanish). Although no one can learn medical terminology in a day, the program provides valuable continuing education for anyone who interprets in hospitals, health departments, clinics, school health rooms, and other settings.

Palliative Care Training for Healthcare Interpreting

A One-Day Workshop

The Palliative Care curriculum, developed with funding from the California HealthCare Foundation, was designed for working interpreters who have completed introductory training in healthcare interpreting. This is an 8-hour training and includes activities* that allow interpreters to review and practice skills such as sight translation and consecutive and simultaneous interpreting while helping them learn more about palliative care as a new and rapidly growing field in medicine.

The curriculum requires a pre- and post-test, and there is a passing grade.  A certificate of completion will be issued to those who pass the post-test. Lunch will be provided.

  • Anticipate and prepare strategies for challenges encountered when interpreting for chaplains and others who may wish to provide spiritual and moral support to patient and family.
  • Convert key palliative care terms used in context from English to an appropriate equivalent in a non-English language.
